The Balmoral Mini Olympics
The Balmoral Mini Olympics
It’s an Olympic year. And, according to the official games website, “the Olympic Games are the world's only truly global, multi-sport, celebratory athletics competition. With more than 200 countries participating in over 400 events, the Olympics are where the world comes to compete, feel inspired, and be together.”
This year, it’s Paris 2024. And Balmoral 2024!
In late July, Balmoral hosted its own Mini Olympics. The Opening Ceremony was a whole of village affair. Teams positioned themselves around the village ring-road for a two-lap “Torch Relay”. Supporters cheered as residents carried the Balmoral Olympic Torch on its village journey, culminating in a resident-torch-conga-line into community centre. The games were officially declared open!
Over three days, resident teams competed in Olympic sports such as the coveted bean-bag toss, lawn bowls, table tennis, croquet and darts, as well as the challenge of ‘mental gymnastics’ in the form of village trivia. The competition was fierce. The stakes high. The rewards huge. A gold medal for the winning team.
Residents celebrated together at a presentation ceremony in the Balmoral dining room, where the Balmoral Mini Olympics were declared “the best games ever”!
